[Essence] Artifacts Pointers

This lesson is dedicated to my friend, ! Duelist ! I love you.

Introduction

"Artifact" (アーティファクト Ātifakuto) is an archetype of Level/Rank 5 LIGHT Attribute Fairy-Type monsters based around artifacts of ancient history and mythology. They benefit from being destroyed by card effects, and their Main Deck members can be Set as Spell Cards.

Explanation for Importance

Now, before we start on this, let us all face the #1 fact first. MAJORITY of the current Artifacts users prefer to play variant rather than the pure arch and do you know why?

As many of the players have said, the rest are inevitably and obviously useless.

My discussion for today focuses on the essential cards from this archtype which are continuously used for the different decks as their collaborator/synergy/support cards. Let's start off, shall we, Guest?

Artifact Beagalltach

Usually, Beagalltach is played in a deck with having at least 2 to 3 copies of it, especially in the Constellar/Stella Artifact variant; however, there are some decks that do not require a lot of this such as the Traptrix Artifact variant which focuses more on stopping the opponent from spamming the field (Can be considered as an anti-meta/tier 1 deck - we will not discuss this as this is an in-depth discussion of the essential cards only).

Now, why is this card actually used? Honestly speaking, this card can be considered as a chain link 2 Mystical Space Typhoon (Please see [Timing] Ice Hand and Fire Hand ruling lesson to know what MST is).

How would you go about in using this? First off, you should have this card be destroyed when it is placed in the S/T (Spell/Trap Card) Zone and preferably, destroyed during the opponent's turn.

Why is it so important to be in the grave?

Because that is when you get ALL the jiz from this card! The moment Artifact Beagalltach gets destroyed is the moment you can either do amazing plays or cry because your opponent stopped you from continuing it.

What do you do with this?

The moment Artifact Beagalltach hits the grave and has the ability to special summon itself, DO NOT derp/miss this opportunity. If you have Artifact Moralltach set, POP it, do not flaunt the effect out! Use this effect to special summon Moralltach and trigger its effect by destroying a face-up card your opponent controls!

Artifact Moralltach

How important is this card?

This is by far THE most important Artifact monster existing right now because in almost any deck, you can make a combination with this.

Why?

Because when Artifact Moralltach gets sent to the graveyard (Specifically during the opponent's turn) and is special summoned, you can use its destruction effect to give you a possible field advantage.

Which card is it great to combine with?

There are a lot of cards this card can work with but I will list only the top 3:

  • Mystical Space Typhoon
  • Artifact Ignition
  • Artifact Beagalltach

Conclusion for Artifact Moralltach:

Overall, this card's main purpose is to serve as a game state changer OR a miniature single killing Dark Hole (Please consult Dueling Network to see Dark Hole's text).

Artifact Ignition

Artifact Ignition would be known as a wannabe or a replacement for a self-functional Mystical Space Typhoon.

What does that mean?

It means that instead of wasting or inputting 3 copies of Mystical Space Typhoon in your deck in order to destroy your own face-down Artifact monsters, you already have Artifact Ignition to do the job considering it has more effects than a regular MST!

What are its benefits?

Apart from being a Mystical Space Typhoon, it enables the players to have the chance to make or prepare their field, scaring their opponents and making them think to whether to give the field or the offensive a push or to hesitate because of the many (Hopefully) set Artifact monsters.

Another thing about it is that you can control the opponent's Battle Phase for at least a turn because of its mandatory effect for making the opponent skip it, isn't that neat?!

What is a good combination for this?

Really, it is all about the available cards on the field. This card works amazing both with Artifacts Beagalltach and Moralltach.

Artifact Sanctum

What is the effect of the card that the users emphasize more?

Special Summon 1 "Artifact" monster from your Deck.

Unlike the 2 Artifact monsters mentioned above this portion, this card already and immediately gives you the ability to special summon this card and what does that mean?

Yes, that is correct. It's popping time!

Because of this card, and IF this card was activated during the opponent's turn, this card can seriously do a great deal of change or damage to the game state. This is highly beneficial if you are going up against an opponent who uses Fire Fist.

Why Fire Fist?

Fire Fist has a main function of spamming the field with its Formation spells and trap cards (Tenki, Tensu, Gyokkou, and Tensen - Refer to Dueling Network) and because of the amazing ability of Artifact Moralltach OR of Ignition (If combined with Artifact Sanctum), you will have an easier time of popping the Fire Fist field. Of course, there is Full House (Refer to Dueling Network), but we will not tackle that card...

What are the other benefits of Artifact Sanctum?

If this card in its owner's possession is destroyed by an opponent's card: You can target 1 card on the field; destroy that target.

With this effect, and if you are in a critical condition during a duel, a single 'pop' can cause a major advantage for you. Especially if you top deck the next turn!

Artifact Durendal

Considering this is a "Less Vital" Artifact monster card (Especially in variants), this will be discussed briefly.

Pros:

  • A bit of a power house for attacking
  • It is a quick effect
  • It enables or gives you the ability to pop your own field in order for you to do an Artifact combination play

Cons:

  • It is easily overpowered
  • It is not immune to Silent Honor Ark a.k.a Number 101
  • If you use the second effect, there is a high possibility (Especially if your opponent has more than 5 cards in hand) to give you either a great or bad hand which is also applicable for your opponent that WILL or MAY decide who would win the duel

Artifact Unleashed

This card is not heavily used, at least 1 to 2 copies only because as I said above, majority of the Artifact players prefer using the deck in a different variation/mix.

Now what are the pros in using this deck?

  • Can be used in order to have a replay of an opponent's attack which may cause them to retract it
  • An easier special summon for Artifact Durendal or ANY Rank/XYZ monsters since they will use the materials summoned by Artifact Unleashed
  • If you have enough hand control to use the reveal-draw effect, you can draw a card that can give you a win or a lose, depending on your luck

What are the cons?

  • If you used the card during your turn, you cannot attack unless the monsters you have in your field are all Artifact monsters
  • There is a possibility you are not even running Rank/XYZ monsters for this considering you might be using the Artifacts engine as materials for a Synchro summon

Conclusion

As an overall conclusion, by this lesson alone, at least you would have a general idea on what cards Artifact duelists use in their variant or pure Artifacts deck; however, in order not to cause an unwanted debate, you are free to even use the other Artifact cards such as Shield and Labrys (Please consult Dueling Network for reference) since each card a player use is in accordance to his or her preference and this lesson was based on majority of the duelist I have asked on which cards they use for their Artifacts.

Thank you for reading my lesson I love you!
